Kimi Raikkonen says WRC title would mean more than F1 title

06.01.2020

Kimi Raikkonen might be the oldest driver on the Formula 1 grid, but he already has ambitions beyond Formula 1 as he still harbours an ambition to return to rallying.

In an interview with Red Bulletin, the 40-year-old Finn was asked how much a World Rally Championship (WRC) title would mean to him, he replied, "More than my Formula 1 championship. Nobody has done it before, which is another aspect that makes it so interesting."

A hint in there that there is still unfinished business for Raikkonen on dirt, after he quits F1.

The Iceman is no stranger to rally, during his sabbatical from the top flight in 2010 and 2011, he did run a concerted rally campaign with modest success in the WRC. Recording one stage win in the 21 rallies he contested.

In F1, Raikkonen's record is obviously more impressive with 103 podiums on his CV, 21 times on them as a winner in his 312 Grand Prix starts, which began with his debut at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix.

He was World Champion in 2007 as a Ferrari driver and his last win for the Reds was at the 2018 United States Grand Prix. The veteran's contract with Alfa Romeo runs until the end of the forthcoming season. (Report by Roy Franco; Photo by Ivan Toscanelli)
