Will Williams’ new FW43 improve as much on track as it does in looks?

Williams Racing has revealed its 2020 Formula 1 challenger online and it the look of the car is anything to go by, the team should be hoping for a similar step forward in performance.

The all-new RokIt Williams Mercedes FW43 may be an evolution of the FW42, but the team is pinning its hopes on its development delivering a car that can carry George Russell and F1 rookie Nikolas Latifi into the Grand Prix midfield in 2020

“This year marks a fresh start for the team,” team founder Frank’s daughter and Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams pointed out. “We have addressed our areas of weakness and ensured that we have the right people, structures, procedures and resource in place to deliver competitive race cars — we are all committed to re-building Williams and returning the team to competitiveness. The Williams fighting spirit is still very much alive to get back to where we want to be.”

“We worked on understanding the problem areas of the FW42 and developed areas that would give us the most performance gain for the resources at hand,” FW43 designer Doug McKiernan owned up. “The FW43 is a continuous development of the FW42 following some healthy wind tunnel development, while we have worked on improving cooling efficiency, the brakes and the overall weight of the car and will continue to focus on those through the season.”

“Later this week, we will be looking at our single timed lap pace, our long-run pace and the feedback from the drivers to understand where we are and what we do next,” Chief Engineer, Adam Carter promised. “We have teams, both at the track and back at Grove, that will be delving into all aspects that define that lap time during the pre-season tests to ensure we are in the best possible place ahead of the first race in Australia.”

Williams will be relying on young guns, George Russell in his second year of Formula 1 at WIlliams, and F1 rookie Nikolas Latifi to deliver the goods on track this year. "Here she is!” Russell, who impressed in spite of a recalcitrant FW42 last year poated on Faxcebook “Now time to see what she’s like on track.” Latifi added “Can’t wait to hop in later today to get my first taste behind the wheel!”
