In 1979, Jody Scheckter won the Formula 1 drivers' world championship, then known as the Automobile World Championship, for the first and only time. From a total of 15 races, he won the Italian Grand Prix, among others, and took a narrow lead in the overall standings ahead of his team-mate Gilles Villeneuve. Ferrari became constructors' world champion for the sixth time that year.
