Porsche Victory 2017 (24h LeMans)
by René De Boer and Tim Upietz
The Le Mans 24h race was once again unique in 2017. The warmest temperatures in years increased the strain on drivers and material and the retirement rate was unusually high. Toyota had the higher pace, as in previous years, but lost two of the three cars within 30 minutes on the night, while the third Toyota spent a long time in the pits. So it seemed that the way to victory was clear for the Porsche with start number 1, but late on Sunday morning the technical problems put a spanner in the works. Surprisingly, the victory went to the number 2 Porsche, despite an unscheduled pit stop of one hour on Saturday evening. However, Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber did not give up and drove home the 19th overall victory for Porsche at the Sarthe. In the LMGTE-Pro class, the new 911 RSR with mid-engine started for the first time and just missed the podium at its Le Mans debut. In the LMGTE-Am class, the Dempsey-Proton team provided the best Porsche result.
This book presents in words and pictures the appearance of all Porsche teams at Le Mans, from the presentation of the cars to the test day, the technical scrutineering, the free practice and the timed practice sessions, the warm-up and the race. The events off the track, such as the photo session with last year's winners, the press conference and the drivers' parade are also covered.
