After his rally world championship title in 1980, Walter Röhrl switched from Fiat to Mercedes-Benz. However, shortly before the start of the 1981 World Rally Championship, Mercedes ended its involvement in rallying and Röhrl was released from his contract. After waiting several months, Röhrl was given a transitional engagement with Porsche, which meant he could only take part in one WRC round: the Sanremo Rally. With the Porsche 911 SC, however, he had to end the race prematurely in second place due to axle shaft damage.
