The Porsche 911 GT1 was designed primarily for racing from 1996 and built in small numbers for homologation as a road-legal super sports car in order to be approved for use in the USA, Le Mans and the European BPR Global GT Series and, from 1997, the FIA GT Championship.

Despite its designation, it is not considered by some to be a genuine Porsche 911, as it is powered by a water-cooled mid-engine and not the traditional air-cooled rear engine. It also has a completely independent, significantly flatter body made of CFRP.
