There are no cars more aptly described as cult than the VW Beetle and the VW Bus, affectionately known as the Bulli. The history of the Beetle is fundamental to the Volkswagen Group, as the company's foundation in 1937 was explicitly based on its development as an affordable car for broad sections of the population. The Bulli followed in the 1950s as a transport vehicle that was inexpensive to produce and maintain.
