Weekend Review - Styrian Grand Prix at Red Bull Ring

13.07.2020

Lewis Hamilton led Mercedes' domination of the Styrian Grand Prix, round two of the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship, with teammate Valtteri Bottas finishing second, claiming another one-two for the team.

A day earlier, the reigning World Champion delivered a pole-position winning lap for the ages, a stunning effort that put him in top spot of the grid by a massive 1.2 seconds over his closets rival. A pure masterclass as the Briton went on to claim his 85th Formula 1 victory on Sunday.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen looked most likely to dent the Mercedes cause with an upset on his team's home track, but the Dutchman did not have the firepower of the pace setters and had to settle for a third place with teammate Alex Albon fourth.

Further enhancing his reputation was young Lando Norris, McLaren driver snatched fifth place on a thrilling last lap to claim a well earned fifth place, with Carlos Sainz, in the sister car, ninth and making it a double points finish for the Woking outfit.

Haas have been slow to start this season, but in the race there was a glimmer of hope as the team showed improved race pace, their drivers Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean ending 12th and 13th respectively.

In contrast, Ferrari endured their worst weekend in memory as their drivers Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc collided on the opening lap, not long after both damaged red cars were retired. A disappointing double DNF for the Scuderia.

There will be no rest for Formula 1 teams and drivers as the 'circus' moves to Budapest for this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix at Hungaroring from 17 to 19 July.

For F1 fans we have all their latest official Mercedes merchandise to celebrate this memorable victory, with the Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and Haas collections also available for you to show your loyalties!
