Mercedes driver Bottas wins dramatic first 2020 F1 race in Austria

06.07.2020

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas powered to victory in the 2020 season-opening Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, winning a dramatic race with Charles Leclerc salvaging pride for Ferrari in second and sensational 20-year old Lando Norris claiming his first F1 podium for McLaren.

Bottas led from pole position with Lewis Hamilton in tow and the rest of the field chasing. Max Verstappen, expected to be a serious challenge to Mercedes on Red Bull's home track but a technical issue sidelined him.

Thereafter, it became a race of high attrition with a couple of safety car periods followed by a decisive incident in which Hamilton tapped the Red Bull of Alex Albon in their fight for third. This put the latter out of contention, while the World Champion was handed a five second penalty.

With Bottas clear out front winning the race, 2.78 seconds ahead of second placed Leclerc and Norris in third doing enough to edge Hamilton for that final podium spot.

Carlos Sainz was fifth, ahead of Sergio Perez (Racing Point) in 6th; Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) 7th, Esteban Ocon (Renault) eighth; Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo) Ninth and the final point going to Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel in tenth.

Round two of the reorganised Formula 1 season will be at Red Bull Ring, again, this forthcoming weekend, and will take the form of the Styrian Grand Prix.

For Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren fans it was a good first day back at work with the podium their reward, and here on Paddock Legends we are proud to make available official team wear through our online shop to keep the passion burning for what promises to be an intriguing season of F1.
