25 February: Today in Racing

Editor25.02.2020

Rich in racing history, 25 February saw Jimmy Murphy steer his Dusenberg to victory in the 1923 Beverly Hills Grand Prixe race; in 1934, Per-Viktor Widengren drove his a Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 Monza to win the Norwegian Grand Pix at Mjosa and Joe Weatherly won the 1962 NASCAR Grand National at Daytona.

Jim Clark won his final race at round 7 of the Tasman Series in searing heat in Melbourne Australia. Double F1 world champion Clark had won the South African Grand Prix on New Years day before he tragically perished in in a Formula 2 crash at Hockenheim on 7 April 1968

In other NASCAR drama, it took until Wednesday 25 January 1959 for NASCAR to make up its mind that Lee Petty had won the inaugural Daytona 500-mile after his dead heat finish with Johnny Beauchamp in the race the Sunday prior, while the 1968 500 saw Cale Yarborough and Lee Roy Yarbrough (note the difference in how their names are spelled) fight all the way before Yarborough beat Yarbrough to the flag by 1.3 seconds.

Elsewhere, Nico Hülkenberg stormed to a double Sprint and Fearure race win for Germamny in an action-packed 2007 South African A1 street race in Durban, while  NASCAR action over the years saw Richard Petty win the 1973 Richmond 500, Mark Martin take the ’90 Excitement 400, Dale Earnhardt the ’96 Goodwrench 400 and Carl Edwards the 2008 Auto Club 500, while John Bowe took a hat trick of wins in the Bathurst Australian Touring Car races down under.

Off the track, Cosworth in 2004 resumed production of its legendary DFV engine, which had powered drivers to 12 Formula 1 World Championships between 1968 and 1983, to make it financially viable to produce spares and replacements for the V8 engines being used in historic F1 racing.

Jean Todt raised eyebrows in the paddock by suggesting in 2005 that Ferrari should take a larger share of the sport's revenues than any other team. More recently F1 boss Todt has changed his tune somewhat since he has worn his FIA crown.

In other news, Formula 1 star Francois Cevert was born this day 1944, sportscar racer Jurgen Lassig in 1943 and NACAR pilot Davey Allison in 1961. (Photo: A1GP)
