The French Grand Prix took place on 28 June 1998 at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours and covered a distance of 71 laps of 4.25 km each, corresponding to a total distance of 301.750 km.
Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari F300 started the race from 2nd position. Right at the start, he was able to overtake his biggest rival Mika Häkkinen in the McLaren-Mercedes and secure the lead. During the race, Schumacher benefited from his teammate Eddie Irvine, who was able to leave the two McLaren-Mercedes drivers Häkkinen and Coulthard behind. In the end, Schumacher won the race comfortably ahead of Irvine and Häkkinen, giving Ferrari its first Formula 1 one-two victory in over eight years. With his third victory of the season, he closed the gap on Häkkinen, who was leading the overall standings.
