Mick fired-up for second Formula 2 season with 2020 title in mind

05.12.2019

If Mick Schumacher’s second year in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship was anything to go by in 2018, then his sophomore season in the FIA Formula 2 Championship next year should be something to savour as the young gun continues to grow in the footsteps of his seven-time Formula 1 world champion dad Michael.

Mick made an inauspicious Formula 3 debut back in 2017, scoring a single podium third at Monza, but his second season in the FIA’s erstwhile third tier in 2018 proved stellar. The young German made a steady start with a couple more thirds in  Hungary and Holland before his first win in Spain, followed by two more wins in the next two races and then a blinding quintet of wins on the trot to clinch the title.

Roll on a season and Mick has just completed his learning year in the FIA Formula 2 championship and by all measures, the Formula 3 champion had a better rookie season than he did back in his debut F3 year. All of which augurs pretty well for his sophomore F2 stint...

Mick admittedly struggled to get on top of the tyres like most F2 rookies do in their first year, but there were signs of brilliance through the season, not least of all his stunning debut win off pole position in Hungary in August. “It was great to take my first win in Hungary,” Mick explains. “I was really happy after so much bad luck earlier in the season, but that win is a huge boost going into the new season."

“2019 was not an easy year — learning the best Formula 2 strategy, how to deal with tyre degradation and when to best use the grip has proven a bit of a learning curve and we have had our fair share of bad luck too, but I did win that race and I had a few poles and fastest laps. “It was the same in my first year in Formula 3 and then we really came on strong in the second half of my second season there, which brought us the title. “That is at least a good omen!

“Now I go into my second Formula 2 year with my Prema team and I’m looking forward to building on this experience and all the valuable lessons we have learned about how to handle the car, to get the best out of the tyres and now I also better understand how to work in their bigger team environment. “I cannot wait prove Prema right by keeping me in their car.”

Son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael, 20-year-old Mick Schumacher is part of Ferrari’s driver academy and is tipped to move up to F1 in future. “Having my first victory in F2 is a great thing.”

Mick concluded: “Whether I go to F1 next year or in two years or maybe three, I don’t know.” (Report by Michele Lupini; Photo by F1 Media)
