Max Verstappen extends with Red Bull until the end of 2023

07.01.2020

Dutch Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen has inked a contract extension which will keep him with Red Bull until the end of 2023, ending speculation of a move away from the organisation that gave him his break.

The 22-year-old will reportedly bank a salary that will rank him among the top three earners in the top flight while adding pressure on Honda and Red Bull to provide him with a competitive title-challenging package asap.

The announcement means that the sport's two young leading lights remain contracted to their respective teams for the foreseeable future, with Charles Leclerc confirmed by Ferrari until the end of 2024.

Verstappen's decision to stay with the energy drinks outfit comes in the wake of Ferrari closing the door on him in the wake of some unsavoury accusations made by him about the Reds during the last campaign while Lewis Hamilton is certain to extend with Mercedes for at least another two years, closing that option for obvious reasons.

When Hamilton extends as he is expected to do soon, it means that the top three teams have chosen their number one drivers for the next few years.

In the team press release confirming the new deal, Verstappen said: “I am really happy to have extended my partnership with the Team. Red Bull believed in me and gave me the opportunity to start in Formula 1 which I have always been very grateful for.

"Over the years I have grown closer and closer with the Team and besides the passion from everyone and the on-track performance it is also really enjoyable to work with such a great group of people. Honda coming onboard and the progress we have made over the last 12 months gives me even more motivation and the belief that we can win together.

"I respect the way Red Bull and Honda work together and from all sides everyone is doing what they can to succeed. I want to win with Red Bull and our goal is, of course, to fight for a World Championship together.”

Team principal Christian Horner added: "It is fantastic news for the Team to have extended our agreement with Max up-to and including the 2023 season. With the challenge of the 2021 regulation changes on the horizon continuity in as many areas as possible is key.

"Max has proven what an asset he is to the Team, he truly believes in the partnership we have forged with our engine supplier Honda, and we are delighted to have extended our relationship with him.”
