Ferrari have high expectations for Mick Schumacher in 2020

18.12.2019

It does not take an armchair Nostradamus to predict that Mick Schumacher will one day make it into Formula 1, the son of the legend Michael Schumacher seemed almost predestined for that fate.

The 2018 Formula 3 Champion just completed a solid, if not stellar, rookie Formula 2 season in which he finished 12th. Season two in the F1-feeder series will be far more telling as he is now expected to compete for the title.

As part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, he has already done F1 testing for Alfa Romeo and Ferrari to give him a taste of what awaits him should he tick all the boxes in his second F2 season and, without beating about the bush, he needs to finish in the top three to fully deserve the drive.

But even then there is little chance Schumi junior will get a crack at Ferrari, he will have to wait for that according to team boss Mattia Binotto who was asked by journos at the recent end-of-season lunch, with media at Maranello, if Michael's lad was ready to be a Scuderia driver in 2021.

Binotto replied, "It's really too early to say that. For 2021 it will be important to have drivers with experience because the cars will be completely new. But I am pretty sure that he is a good candidate for Formula 1."

"We expect a lot from him next year," added the Italian team boss, inadvertently or not dialling on the pressure for the 20-year-old German. (Report by Roy Franco; Photo by Ferrari)
