Ayrton Senna started here with his Lotus 97T from the John Player Special Team Lotus. Senna already secured pole position in qualifying and led the race. In difficult weather conditions, the Brazilian showed an impressive driving performance and thus secured an unchallenged start-finish victory. It was his first Formula 1 Grand Prix victory and, together with the fastest race lap, also his first "Grand Slam" in a Formula 1 race.
