Damon Hill surpassed father Graham's tally of 14 grand prix victories as he used his pole position to best effect to clear off and leave the rest in his mist and win the 1996 Brazilian Grand Prix for Williams.  Michael Schumacher took the 2002 Brazilian win for Ferrari in spite of flag man, soccer legend Pele missing Michael and brother Ralph’s BMW-Williams before waving the chequer at Takuma Sato two laps down! Moving on to 2019, Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Valttieri Bottas benefited third-placed Charles Leclec’s car troubles to win in Bahrain.

In other World Rally action over the years, Sébastien Loeb won the 2008 Rally Argentina for Citroën from Chris Atkinson’s Subaru and Daniel Sordo in another Citroën, while Thierry Neuville took his Hyundai to 2019 Tour de Corse success over Sébastien Ogier’s Citroën and Elfyn Evans in a Ford.

Looking further back, Arthur Waite won the first Australian Grand Prix at  Phillip Island in an Austin 7 in 1928, while Bobby Unser found Indycar success in 1968 while Jimmy Vasser won on tour in the '96 Australian Indy Car GP and in US sportscar racing, and in US sportscar racing, Rinaldo Capello and Allan McNish took ALMS honours for Audi in 2007 and Antonio Garcia and Richard Westbrook 2012 Grand-Am honours

It was a quiet day in NASCAR as Buck Baker, Fireball Roberts and Cale Yarborough took Grand National honours, while, Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin took Cup wins, while down under, Jim Richards won Aussie Touring Cars in 1985 and Will Davison in 2012.

A few speed records were also broken on this day — in 1904 Arthur Duray established a new 143km/h world land speed mark driving a Gobron-Brillié in the 'Paris-Madrid’ race, before Louis Rigolly also driving a Gobron Brillié upped the mark to 153km/h on the on the return trip. 94 years later in 1998, Andy Wallace drove a standard McLaren F1 to a new 387kmh production car world speed record in Wolfsburg, Germany.

In other 31 March history, Daimler in 1901 built a revolutionary high performance car for Austro-Hungarian Consul General Emile Jellinek, which he called Mercedes after his daughter. The name stuck! The Ford Motor Company publicly unveiled its eternal flathead V8 engine in 1932 and Carlo Abarth founded his eponymous Abarth brand on this day 1942. Today is also F1 racer Anders Olofsson’s birthday, while legendary early racer and 1915 Indy 500 winner Ralph DePalma (72) passed away on this day in 1956. (Photo: Motorsport Images)
